In addition to the casual attire expected of sailplane pilots (I love that X-Plane’s glider pilot avatar is rather scruffy looking – a description that often fits me pretty well), another thing about the sport that suits me is that it’s not an early morning activity.
Larry’s told me stories of getting up before dawn to help his brother launch hot air balloons, yet another non-motorized aviation activity. Balloon flights require like ten times the crew size of a glider launch, so just forget all that stuff I wrote about how flying gliders is complicated.
And by contrast, soaring school started at 11:00.
Except nobody told me it starts at 9:00 on weekends, so I was late for class.
I still got in 9 flights.
Sasha wrote, “Overall, very good progress!!!”
But I was still disgusted with my inconsistent performance of soft release, and ongoing clumsiness with landing and roll out.
Too often, Sasha needed to intervene to keep landings from going badly awry.
